What Is Modern Lifestyle Photography?

by Jessica on October 16, 2009

Remember the days when your mom made you wear that white turtleneck under the button up jean shirt? Your brother wore the same thing and your little sister had a cute denim dress. You were forced to put your hand here, turn this way and smile. Keep smiling. Quit messin’ around! Don’t look at your brother, look at the camera.

Modern Lifestyle Photography captures those moments where you poked your brother and he poked you back. It captures your baby sister twirrling in her dress. It captures your dad stealing a kiss from your mom. It captures life as it happens.

A Modern Lifestyle Photographer captures more than just a subject; she captures the sites, sounds, tastes, smells and textures that interact with her subject. She doesn’t take pictures; she captures moments.  She may decide to place a toddler in the middle of his toys but doesn’t expect him to stay there while she snaps a picture of him smiling. Chances are, he’ll bolt right for the legos or dinosaurs. And that’s when the real magic happens. His natural smile appears because he has just found his favorite T-Rex!

Digital photography has opened the doors to modern lifestyle photography. Your photographer will probably take 10 or 20 photos before capturing the right moment. That would be extremely expensive using a film camera! And you would end up with a pile of similar pictures. Digital cameras also provide instant feedback and let the photographer know if she “got the shot.”

Here’s an example of a traditional photograph. When Cali was born, we had family pictures done by a traditional national photography company. We were extremely disappointed with the cold, posed pictures and bland background. In fact, I never framed and hung the 8×10 print; I didn’t want to show off the boring family picture!

Contrast the traditional photograph with these two modern lifestyle photographs. They were taken in our front yard and in the rusty bed of our 1979 Ford truck. We especially love the photo in the truck where Owen is crying and Cali is up doing her own thing. It truly captures a day in the life of our family. (Special thanks to www.SaraDHarper.com for taking our family pictures!)

In the near future, you will be seeing more and more families move away from traditionally posed photography. Families will opt to play together in their front yard leaves than to sit in a lifeless studio. Picture frames filled with memorable prints will scatter the house walls and tables, creating an amazing conversation piece for years to come.
